Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants eliminate the need for dental surgery and because of this they have changed the face of implant placement. The development of this type of dental implants has allowed the dentist to place the anchors in the jaw during the one simple procedure.

Mini dental implants are most commonly used as a support for dentures and overdentures. Their purpose is to stabilize them and give them better retention so you no longer have to suffer with loose dentures and constant fitting.

Mini dental implants require no bone grafting, making this implant procedure much easier. Regular dental implants require enough bone for them to be placed, so most of the time bone grafting procedure is necessary prior to the dental implant surgery. For mini dental implants, the procedure is very simple, requires no recovery period and the denture can be fitted the same day of the procedure.

Configuration of Mini Dental iImplants

Mini dental implants are small dental implants designed to act in place of  a natural tooth root. They are made out of titanium (titanium is the best material accepted by the organism, minimal chances of rejection) and are either sprayed with calcium phosphate or they contain it along the length of the screw root.

Their unique design and structure promote faster healing process and long lasting results. The head of the implant resembles a ball and this ball fits firmly into the retaining machanism so that together these structures hold the denture. The denture sits comfortably on the gum tissue and are able to withstand pressure and natural forces.

How Are Mini Dental Implants Placed?

The mini dental implant procedure requires about one hour to complete. In the case of lower jaw implants, four mini dental implants will be placed about 5 mm apart. Prior to this procedure, your dentist will make a detailed plan on where to place these implants.

The mini dental implant procedure goes as follows:

  1. Mild anesthetic to numb the area
  2. Small hole drilled in the jawbone to situate each mini dental implant
  3. Each implant si screwed into place and tightened with the winged wrench
  4. Ratchet wrench is used to fully stabilize the implants
  5. The denture is measured against mini implants
  6. The denture is sent to the lab to have the holes drilled in to accomodate the mini dental implants.
  7. Once the denture is modified it is affixed to the dental implants
  8. The rubber O-ring on each MDI snaps into the designated spot on the denture, and the denture then rests on the gum tissue.

What is important to mention is that no discomfort is experienced after the procedure. Light eating can be presumed few days after the procedure.
